Boston, MA
Crucible of the Republic
Your journey begins in the capital city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. As one of the oldest cities in the country, Boston is steeped in history that attracts over 20 million visitors a year. In addition to playing a crucial role in the formation of the Republic, Boston has always been a hub for education, arts and culture. It is also an excellent starting point for your fall tour of New England.
Salem, MA
City of Witches
From Boston, head northeast to the city of Salem. The witch trials held here in the late 17th century have left an indelible mark on both the town and the popular imagination of its inhabitants. Enjoy a bounty of supernatural tourist attractions from the Salem Witch Museum to the Old Burying Point Cemetery. Afterwards, enjoy a witchy brew at your choice of over 60 restaurants and cafes, and let Salem cast its spell on you.
Gloucester, MA
Famous for Fishing
Head north from Salem until you reach Yankee Division Highway and follow it east toward Gloucester. The city was known for shipbuilding in the 17th and 18th centuries and continues to play an important role in the fishing industry. In fact, Gloucester is home to the famous "Gorton's Fisherman." Curiosity seekers will want to visit the Hammond Castle, a medieval-style castle built in the 1920s by John Hammond Jr., the inventor responsible for the remote control.
Newburyport, MA
Keepers of the Light
For our next stop, you will need to backtrack a bit and then head north. Continue north along the Newburyport Turnpike between two wilderness areas until you reach the coastal city of Newburyport with its quaint and bustling waterfront. Newburyport is home to some picturesque lighthouses, including the Newburyport Harbor Light, also called the Plum Island Light, and the Newburyport Lighthouse, which boasts a restaurant that is open all year long.
Portsmouth, NH
North Church
From Newburyport, continue north on US1, cross the border into New Hampshire, and keep going until you reach Portsmouth. You will know you have arrived when you see the North Church's historic steeple, which is visible from just about everywhere in town. Adventure seekers can take advantage of water sports like kayaking or tour the scenic Isles of Shoals about six miles off the coast, or "two leagues from the main."
Kennebunkport, ME
Dock Square
Leaving Portsmouth you will enter the state of Maine and travel approximately 30 miles north to Kennebunkport. Originally a fishing and shipbuilding community, Kennebunkport is largely a resort town. Maine is not known for its beaches but you will find quite a few in the southern part of the state, including Kennebunkport Beach. Historic Dock Square offers a lively seaside spot where you can enjoy fresh seafood to sustain you on the last leg of your journey.
Portland, ME
Old Port
Continue north for another 35 miles until you reach the resilient city of Portland, the largest in the state of Maine. The city was nearly destroyed by fire during Independence Day celebrations in 1866, but was rebuilt. Some of the surviving landmarks include the Victoria Mansion and the Wadsworth-Longfellow House, important for its historical and literary significance. The now thriving Old Port district is home to an abundance of restaurants and cafes, the perfect place in which to conclude your drive!
